Commemorating Mandela Day across the district

In celebration of Mandela Day, our Municipal Health Services (MHS) teams in collaboration with different stakeholders and organisations came together to reflect on Madiba’s life, legacy and his values and principles to make a difference in the lives of others.

Our MHS team in WItzenberg joined forces with the Western Cape Government Department of Social Development and Witzenberg Municipality who hosted an event named Mandela Day 6.7km Fun Walk on Friday 18 July 2025 at Bella Vista Sports Grounds.

The MHS team decided to do hand washing demonstrations with the community in attendance following the 10 steps to clean hands, that highlights the importance of applying good hygiene practices to prevent sickness and diseases. A special lotion that can only be seen under UV light were applied to hands. After the handwashing was completed, participants hands were illuminated with the UV light. If the lotion was still visible under the light, it was a sign that they did not wash their hands properly. This was quite exciting for the kids and the interactive approach helped to reinforce education on hand hygiene. A total of 150+ people were successfully reached.

Another handwashing campaign was conducted at Empilisweni Day Hospital, Zwelethemba. This initiative was run by our MHS, Worcester Office.

The aim of the campaign was to promote proper hand washing within the community, also following the 10 steps to clean hands which highlights the importance of effective lathering, scrubbing, and thorough rinsing to eliminate germs and prevent the spread of diseases.

The campaign reached a total of 420 people. In addition to the demonstrations and practical skills gained, participants received educational materials that included information on the “10 steps to clean hands”, “Diarrhoea”, and “Be water wise.” Children in attendance also received snack-packs.

In Langeberg, the MHS team partnered with Langeberg C3 Heart Network, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Department of Correctional Services, Langeberg Municipality, and several other organisations to commemorate Mandela Day.

The Langeberg MHS team joined the Dorpsig community in Robertson. Together they did a community clean-up drive which aimed at promoting a healthier and cleaner environment.

In addition to the clean-up efforts, food parcels, clothing and stationery were distributed to less fortunate members of the community, ensuring that the day not only uplifted the environment but also brought relief and dignity to those in need.

This collective effort stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement in building a better and more inclusive society for all.

These campaigns were well received and a major success. It aligned with the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day by promoting health and dignity of all persons and it also serves as a reminder of CWDM’s commitment to supporting and upholding the dignity of all persons.
